ヴィオラ・ニコラスは、写真映像メディアにおける見ることと見られること、現代社会に氾濫するイメージとそれに付随する意味など、視覚とメディアの構造に対して批評性を持ち合わせた作品をこれまで発表してきた。それらの関心は、視覚とメディアの構造を暴くことではなく、ただそこに実存の震えを宿すことにある。

本展覧会は、ドイツから留学するヴィオラが、日本で出会った友人たちのポートレートを中心に構成する。日本という土地に一時的に身を置く者たちを眼差す写真は、「無常」や「間」の概念と結びつきながら被写体の不確かな位置を肯定する。「写真で来たのか。列車で来たのか」。移民労働者の実存に迫ったジョン・バージャーは、夢の中で遠くから会いに来た友人にそう問いかけたという。写真に映るそれは不在の表現でありながら、実存を連れて来る交通手段でもある。

外から来る者とそこに暮らす者が複雑に交差する京都という都市で、ヴィオラの写真はその交差点に立ち止まり、去りゆくもの、留まれないもの、その風景に光をあてる。写真を見ることは他者の像を読むことであると同時に、自らの存在の位置を問い直す行為でもある。ヴィオラの写真は、その問いを、まるで呼吸のように、私たちの内部に静かに滑り込ませる。

“Came from Both Sides”

Viola Niklas has consistently presented works that critically engage with the structures of vision and media—namely, the dynamics of seeing and being seen in photographic and cinematic media, and the proliferation of images and their attendant meanings in contemporary society. The artists interest lies not in exposing these structures, but in gently imbuing them with a tremor of existential presence.

This exhibition centers on portraits of friends Viola encountered while studying abroad in Japan. These photographs, capturing these individuals who reside on a temporary status in this land, resonate with Japanese concepts such as mujo (impermanence) and aida (interval), affirming the subjects’ indeterminate positions. “Did you come by photograph, or by train?”—John Berger, who explored the existential conditions of migrant workers, is said to have asked a friend who visited him in a dream. A photograph, while an expression of absence, can also serve as a vehicle that carries existence across distance.

Set in Kyoto—a city where those who arrive from elsewhere and those who live here intersect in complex ways—Viola’s photographs pause at that intersection, casting light on those who depart, who cannot remain, and on the fleeting landscapes they pass through. To look at a photograph is to read the image of another, and simultaneously to question the placement of one’s own being. Viola’s photographs quietly slip this question inside us, like a breath drawn inward.
